Staff Biographies

The CCHCP team is staffed by a talented group of of individuals. These individuals have constructed significant relationships with leaders and members of numerous communities within King County, Washington State, public agencies, and health care institutions.

Ira SenGupta, MA

Executive Director, Cross Cultural Health Care Program

 

Ira SenGupta, CCHCP's Executive Director, has developed and conducted over 2,000 hours of trainings in cross cultural issues for health care providers in the past year alone. Ira's skills are informed by her experience conducting cultural competency assessments of healthcare institutions and in facilitating and managing major cultural competency initiatives, coalitions, and training programs. A leader in her own community, Ira has extensive experience working with ethnically diverse communities, and has gained a deep understanding of community perspectives on health care.

 

She has lead several community-based research projects and was the principal investigator on developing a compendium of best practices for the CLAS (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services) standards for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health. She also served on the National Committee for Cultural Competence and the Committee for the Development of Cultural Competence Curriculum and Training Modules for Primary Care Physicians. She is currently collaborating with Education Network to Advance Cancer Clinical Trials (ENAACT) to develop and pilot cultural competency training for cancer clinical trial providers to enhance recruitment and retention of minority communities in cancer clinical trials. 

 

Ira's research experience in cross-cultural issues and cultural competency in healthcare, and dynamic training and facilitation skills have made her a key resource for cultural competency training and assessment in healthcare settings nationally. She brings to her workshops a genuine enthusiasm for the subject, a wealth of stories and information, and an energetic style.

Katie Maynard, MSW, MLIS


Special Projects Manager

Katie Maynard is the Special Projects Manager for CCHCP.  She develops new publications and programs for the agency based on community needs.  She assists with research to support agency curricula and program development.  She also provides supervision for CCHCP's great team of volunteers and interns.

With both a MLIS and a MSW, she has a background in clinical Social Work and Library and Information Science.  This unique blend of skills provides a solid ability to gather and interpret information through the lens of cultural diversity and strength-based practice.  Katie has extensive experience partnering with diverse communities, providing counseling and community referrals, and volunteer management.  She has worked in community mental health, educational, and medical settings.

Dedicated to volunteerism, Katie gives her time to various local organizations such as Books to Prisoners, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Youth Tutoring Program.  She is currently a peer reviewer for Community-Engaged Scholarship for Health (CES4health.info), through Community-Campus Partnerships for Health.

Nimisha Ghosh Roy, MAT


Cultural Competency Program Manager

 

Nimisha Ghosh Roy, Cultural Competency Program Manager for CCHCP, provides customized cultural competency trainings for numerous non-profit and community-based organizations in the region. She has worked on system-wide cultural competency assessments, including a twelve hospital conglomerate and a regional community health center. She was one of the primary curriculum developers and writers for the 2010 Interactive Textbook for Medical Interpreters, used in the CCHCP Bridging the Gap (BTG) Training Program.

 

Since joining CCHCP, Nimisha has presented at many conferences, including those held by the International Medical Interpreters Association, Diversity Rx, New Partners for Smart Growth, NW Environmental Health and the Partners in Emergency Preparedness. Her current projects include the development of online cultural competency trainings for a local health care training organization and the CCHCP Environmental Justice Training and Consulting Program. She is also one of the coordinators of the CCHCP community-based speaker series, "Can You Hear Me?"

 

Nimisha has a Masters in Teaching from Seattle Pacific University. Before joining CCHCP, she worked in a variety of educational settings, including urban and rural communities, public and private schools and online learning communities. Nimisha is a mentor with the American Women in Science - Girls in Engineering, Math and Science Program, which serves underrepresented student populations in the greater Seattle area. She is also on the Leadership Council for the Northwest Girls Coalition.

Barry Fatland, BA

Bridging the Gap Manager and Trainer

Barry Fatland has worked in defense of immigrants since 1968 and had been interpreting since 1973. He has a BA in Spanish from the University of Washington, and taught in the public schools in Seattle, WA and Houston, TX. 

He was the executive secretary of the USLA* Justice Committee in New York City from 1978 to 1981 and edited the organizations's quarterly magazine, the USLA Reporter. He is the Washington State representative of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) and has been involved for more than a year and a half inthe unionization efforts of medical interpreters in Washington State, Interpreters United/Washington Federation of State Employees, serving as Chair of the union's Elections Committee. 

He is currently Interpreter Training Program Manager and Trainer for the Bridging the Gap course offered nationally by CCHCP.  He has travelled extensively throughout the Americas, is a Washington State DSHS-certified medical interpreter Spanish<>English and is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.

 Ishani Ghosh, BA

 

Office Manager

 

Ishani Ghosh has experience as a travel agent, interpreter, and teacher.  She has served on the executive board of Uttoron, an organization dedicated to promoting the culture of Bengal, a state in India.  Ishani is well-suited to work in an organization devoted to cross cultural understanding.  She has lived in two vastly different multicultural countries, India and the United States.  Ishani's interests include gardening, music, cooking and hiking.

Juan Gutierrez, MA, MPH


Bridging the Gap Curriculum Developer and Trainer


Juan Gutierrez has a medical degree from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia, a master's degree in occupational safety and health administration form the Universidad Del Rosario, and a master's in public health from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky.


Juan has solid experience in the field.  Before joining CCHCP, he was a Language Access Plan Coordinator, as well as faculty for Western Kentucky University's Certificate Program in Cross Cultural Communication in Health Care. Juan has served as the International Medical Interpreter's Association (IMIA) state representative for Kentucky, on the Kentucky Hospital Association Committee for Effective Communication in Hospitals, and on the board of the South Eastern Medical Interpreter's Association (SEMIA).
