CCHCP at the International Medical Interpreter Association (IMIA) Conference Ira SenGupta and Rose Long presented at the recently concluded 2009 Annual Conference of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) on Sunday, Oct 11 in Boston, MA. Ms. SenGupta spoke on Language Access' Role in Recruitment and Retention in Cancer Clinical Trials.
Rose Long presented on Language Access and its Role in Environmental Justice. , 10/12/2009 2009 Symposium of the National Association of Social Workers, Iowa Chapter Ira SenGupta presented the keynote speech -From Cultural Bump to Cultural Congruence: Enhancing Cultural Competence in Health and Human Services- at the recently concluded 2009 Symposium of the National Association of Social Workers, Iowa Chapter in Des Moines. The theme of the annual symposium was -Growth, Change, and Competency in a Culturally Diverse World. About 300 social workers attended the meeting ON April 17, 2009 ably coordinated by Kelli Soyer, Executive Director of NASW, Iowa Chapter. CCHCP, 06/01/2009 CCHCP Presented at National WIC Association's 26th Annual Conference Ira SenGupta, Executive Director, recently presented on Cultural Competency and Working Effectively with Interpreters at the 26th Annual Conference of the National WIC Association in Nashville, Tennessee. A rich diversity of people access WIC (Women, Infant and Children) services bringing with them worldviews and approaches to diet and nutrition, pregnancy, breastfeeding, alcohol and drug use, family planning, and healthcare that may be different from the WIC staff who serve them. More than 900 WIC staff and administrators attended the conference on May 24 to 27 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville. CCHCP, 06/17/2009 Bridging the Gap Training at the Alaska Immigration Justice Project On March 9 to 13, 2009, Rose Long, Director of the Bridging the Gap (BTG) Interpreter Training Program at CCHCP, presented the week-long training to 23 participants. The class was a very diverse group, languages represented were Laotian, Yup'ik, Spanish, Tagalog, Arabic, Korean, Nuer, Russian, Hmong, Vietnamese, Bosnian-Serbian-Croatian, Portuguese, and Mandarin. Barb Jacobs, Program Manager of the Language Interpreter Center (LIC) of the Alaska Immigration Justice Project (AIJP)successfully coordinated this training. In 2007, the Municipality of Anchorage awarded the Mayor's Community & Non-profit Organization Diversity Award to AIJP. AIJP is dedicated to protecting the human rights of all Alaskans by providing comprehensive immigration legal services and language interpreter services throughout Alaska. Staff Biographies The CCHCP team is staffed by a talented group of of individuals. These individuals have constructed significant relationships with leaders and members of numerous communities within King County, Washington State, public agencies, and health care institutions. Ira SenGupta, MA Executive Director, Cross Cultural Health Care Program Ira SenGupta, CCHCP's Executive Director, has developed and conducted over 2,000 hours of trainings in cross cultural issues for health care providers in the past year alone. Ira's skills are informed by her experience conducting cultural competency assessments of healthcare institutions and in facilitating and managing major cultural competency initiatives, coalitions, and training programs. A leader in her own community, Ira has extensive experience working with ethnically diverse communities, and has gained a deep understanding of community perspectives on health care. She has lead several community-based research projects and was the principal investigator on developing a compendium of best practices for the CLAS (Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services) standards for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Minority Health. She also served on the National Committee for Cultural Competence and the Committee for the Development of Cultural Competence Curriculum and Training Modules for Primary Care Physicians. She is currently collaborating with Education Network to Advance Cancer Clinical Trials (ENAACT) to develop and pilot cultural competency training for cancer clinical trial providers to enhance recruitment and retention of minority communities in cancer clinical trials. Ira's research experience in cross-cultural issues and cultural competency in healthcare, and dynamic training and facilitation skills have made her a key resource for cultural competency training and assessment in healthcare settings nationally. She brings to her workshops a genuine enthusiasm for the subject, a wealth of stories and information, and an energetic style. ___________________________ Rose Long Director of Bridging the Gap Medical Interpreter Training Program Rose Long is the Director of our acclaimed Bridging the Gap medical interpreter training program. Rose has a long and varied history of working in the community in interpreting, community health education, community building/organizing, and outreach. Over the years she has developed, implemented, and administered robust training and health programs for multiple community-based organizations. Her most recent project, the Healthy Homes and Community Project, was a community-based participatory research project with Neighborhood House in the redeveloped High Point community of Seattle. This project focused on empowering communities and environmental justice. ___________________________ Nimisha Ghosh Roy Program Developer and Coordinator Nimisha Ghosh Roy is a program developer and coordinator for CCHCP, supporting both the Bridging the Gap Medical Interpreter Training Program and the Cultural Competency Training Program. Nimisha has completed her Masters in Teaching from Seattle Pacific University. Before joining CCHCP, she worked in a variety of educational settings, including urban and rural communities, public and private schools and online learning communities.
