Training of Trainers The Training of Trainers in cultural competence is normally offered as a three to four day workshop. | Goals of cultural competency trainings: - increase awareness of differences,
- increase valuing of and respect for differences, and
- develop skills for interacting with differences among people.
Cultural competence is a developmental process. Beyond awareness of their own subtle expectations or assumptions, there is a need for knowledge about the different cultural norms, lifestyle needs and personal preferences of individuals from different groups. Participants will learn the five elements of cultural competency and their application through a variety of interactive methods. At the end of the workshop they will be able to identify the relevance of each element in their individual workplace. They will be more aware of how cultural misunderstandings contribute to the negative dynamics between provider and patient and between peers and team members. In becoming more aware they will be able to utilize the tools of cultural competency that will enable positive and constructive dynamics. | | | | | The standard tools that were once utilized for recruitment and retention of an effective workforce now need to be renewed and revised to meet the needs of rapidly changing communities and workplaces. Cultural competence plays a critical role in successful recruitment and retention. This training will examine barriers and develop strategies and practical applications. | The advanced training workshops have been developed by the Cross Cultural Health Care Program and are designed to be taught in an eight hour format. The trainings focus on strategies to end health disparities and on achieving health equity for medically underserved communities. Each of the advanced trainings is presented with short background information and learning objectives. A variety of interactive instructional methods will be utilized to deliver the content. Relevant case scenarios will assist in skills building. The recommended strategies will enhance effective cross cultural communications and the creation and sustaining of effective personal and professional partnerships for health, social and human services. | | Background: Your workforce is in place, you project goals in view and your strategic plan in motion, now how will you build and sustain the momentum through high functioning teams? | | Background: There are numerous barriers to cross-cultural communications that must be overcome to ensure a successful project outcome. Creative solutions are required, involving a combination of proactive policies and actions. In this session three significant barriers and associated strategies will be discussed. Learning Objectives: - Participants will develop an understanding of the role culture plays in communication in the health care setting.
- Participants will increase understanding of high and low context communication patterns
- Participants will explore concepts and expectations of cross-cultural communication patterns, in relationship to the specific cultures represented in the patient and staff groups in their workplace.

| | Background: Conflict is difficult to manage for most of us, and it becomes more so when employees and managers have different rules about how to handle conflict. Along with conflicts about schedules, work projects or assignments, differences in approach can spark dissent. Some employees prefer direct discussion of differences while others find this approach upsetting and disruptive to smooth work relationships. In addition, differences in attitudes toward job status may influence how people deal with conflict. Learning Objectives: - Discuss the imperatives for cultural competence in an evolving workplace

| | Background: Research has shown that poor health communication can easily disrupt understanding between patient and health professionals. This is turn often reduces the public's trust in the health care system resulting in lower adherence to physician recommended treatment plan. The impact shows up in poor health outcomes and continuing health disparities. Learning Objectives - Participants will be able to: - Define organizational cultural competence and the imperatives for developing and sustaining a culturally congruent health care organization.

Strategies for Working Effectively with Interpreters Background: As the diversity of the populations we serve continues to grow, the importance of “culturally and linguistically appropriate” communication in health and social services is undeniable. Cultural misunderstandings and miscommunications contribute to negative dynamics between providers and patients/clients, threatening patient/client satisfaction, the effective delivery of services and the increase of health and social disparities. The effective utilization of interpreters is a viable strategy that enhances patient/client provider communication, improves service outcomes and meets the goals of the CLAS standards related to linguistic access.
